How to choose a print process using quantity, artwork variants, lead time, colour control and repeat-order economics.

The short answer

Digital printing usually wins when quantities are lower, artwork changes frequently or many variants share a run. Rotogravure usually becomes more economical and repeatable at larger sustained volumes, after cylinder cost and setup are absorbed.

What drives the decision

  • Digital has lower prepress tooling but a higher variable print cost.
  • Gravure requires cylinders and setup but can deliver efficient long runs.
  • Colour gamut, special inks and reverse-print structures may narrow the options.
  • Variant count changes the effective MOQ and working-capital requirement.

A better buying approach

  • Compare total run cost including plates or cylinders.
  • Model obsolete inventory risk for fast-changing artwork.
  • Agree colour targets and tolerances before production.
  • Keep source artwork and print specifications under brand control.

Before you place the order

  1. 1Set quantity by variant.
  2. 2Estimate repeat frequency.
  3. 3Confirm material and colour requirements.
  4. 4Compare tooling and reorder economics.
  5. 5Approve a process-representative proof.

Important

The right process can change as the brand scales. A launch may begin digitally and migrate to gravure once repeat demand supports the tooling and MOQ.
