How to Sell Plastic and Packaging Scrap in India (and Stay EPR-Compliant)

What packaging scrap is worth selling, how to sort it, which documents to keep, and how registered recyclers fit into EPR.

Baled plastic film scrap ready for recycling

Converters, packers and brands generate steady streams of film trim, rejected pouches, corrugated waste and rigid plastic offcuts. Sorted and documented, much of it can be sold to registered recyclers instead of paying for disposal.

What sells best

  • →Clean, single-material film (PE, BOPP, PET) — mono-material streams are easiest to recycle.
  • →Corrugated and paper waste, kept dry.
  • →Rigid plastics sorted by polymer.
  • →Multi-layer laminates are harder to recycle and usually worth less, but specialised recyclers and co-processors accept them.

How to get a better rate

  1. 1Segregate by material at the point of waste.
  2. 2Keep scrap clean and dry; contamination lowers the value.
  3. 3Bale or bag it consistently so loads can be weighed and graded.
  4. 4Aggregate volume — regular, predictable pickups attract better buyers.

Documents to keep

  • →Weighbridge slips for every pickup.
  • →Invoices or delivery challans from the recycler.
  • →The recycler's registration details — for EPR, brand owners and producers work with recyclers registered on the CPCB EPR portal.
